Organizations: How And Why They Work
The structure of groups, associations and organizations has been a popular topic for writers, students and experts for many decades. The role of management, incentives, goals and other aspects of businesses has been discussed by experts in organizational effectiveness and management techniques. A clear understanding of some of the similarities and differences between a group, an association or an organization is helpful in determining the role of the specific unit.
An organization, by definition, is a collection of people or other entities in a structured arrangement. The root is ‘to organize’. Most associations are organized in some fashion, but groups are typically a looser formation that may not have a precise structure. Groups may or may not have a stated purpose. Associations often do prepare a mission statement. An organization in modern times, has determined that mission statements allow the purpose of the unit to be accomplished much more readily.
Groups can often be very short term in nature. The group doesn’t maintain any identify beyond the event or circumstance. If there are similar events or circumstances that arise in future months or years, a different group may form but rarely will it be identical to the first one. People come and go or the details of the event may change slightly from the previous one.
Associations usually have a longer life span. They may organize themselves and define a purpose for being. They may elect or appoint officers, managers or other formal employees. Associations may provide scholarships to students, participate in philanthropic activities, lobby for political actions or prepare policy statements. State bar associations are an example of this type of structure. They choose members through examinations, maintain ethical standards, and engage in humanitarian efforts jointly.
Business structures are typically considered to be organizations according to most people. A business is defined as to the nature, purpose and components. The business organization can be set up to sell a product or to provide services. There are legal definitions of the business structure, so that there are non-profit businesses and for-profit businesses.
The organization should also define both short and long-term goals. The description of the way in which those goals will be accomplished is a business plan. Without the mission statement, goals and business plan, most businesses will flounder, whether they are for-profit or non-profit units. In a business structure, there are clearly defined levels of responsibility and authority. Each employee or member of the organization should know their duties and to whom to report.
Many business concepts have been tried and discarded over the years. Only a few have stood the test of time. Some businesses have used team-building precepts in order to maintain viability and employee interest.
Organizations who stay with proven methods that have worked in the past may have to find new ways of conducting business. Economic assumptions may no longer be valid. Maintaining a thriving business and satisfied employees will be more difficult, but not impossible even when economics fluctuate.
Organizations can take shape in many different forms, such as an association Toronto and a contractor Toronto. The structure varies accordingly to the unique functions of the business.
