Education is important during a recession. In fact, in today’s economy, people with college degrees are actually four times less likely to be unemployed. But is a college degree worth the debt?
Despite the fact that most people would obviously like to avoid debt, it is sometimes inevitable. But there can be two kinds of debt; good debt and bad debt. An example of debt that is not that great might be taking out a loan to purchase a second or third car, or anything unnecessary that people might feel is totally essential. Good debt might be considered cash that goes towards anything productive – a house, a first car, or an education.
Useful as it might be, “good debt” can become crushing. Students graduating from universities owe more money than they ever have before. That, in conjunction with credit card debit can be a crippling situation for such young people.
If presented with the choice, prospective students should always pick federal loans over private loans. Before taking on this responsibility, they should take certain things into consideration. Students should map out the monthly payments that they have to make in the future, and be certain that it is something that they can afford. The job that they are choosing should be taken into account; will it be worth taking out the loan?
Ultimately, as apparent as it may seem, to cut down on potential debt it is a good idea to know exactly which career is the right one. Staying in college for an extra year trying to determine what to do is costly and unnecessary. Students no longer have the luxury of going to school and figuring out what they would like to do there.
